Which is More Important, Your Resume or Google?

In this day and age you should half expect to walk into an interview and be asked questions about your Facebook page. In our techno world, who you are online IS who you are to a perspective employer. Any employer looking to get a real sense of the person they are interviewing will Google you before you arrive, and likely, this will carry as much if not more weight than your actual resume.

Not only will they check the accuracy of your resume, so don’t fudge, but they will use your internet life to ascertain whether or not you may be any type of a liability to the company or danger to the public.

Why is this so important?
Once you are hired you are an extension of the company, you represent them whether on the job or not in some cases, and they need to at least attempt to insure that you will not cost them money in a lawsuit of any kind. Imagine for instance that you are applying for a position that requires a large amount of travel and you have a less than stellar driving record. If you crash a company vehicle and injure anyone you are opening up the company for huge lawsuits.

You have have to consider that once you put it on the internet it is pretty much open to all. What you post, or others post about you could cost you that dream job, so be careful, you may want to think twice before you post that selfie of the girls crazy Vegas weekend. While a little innocent fun may be considered no big deal, if you consistently post similar items, potential employers may see it as too much liability.
