After you get invited to interview for a job, one thing that makes an applicant uneasy are the questions that they may potentially be asked. Many applicants aren’t aware that there are questions an employer is not legally allowed to ask them. These laws are implemented to ensure that each applicant’s rights are protected, and he or she is not being discriminated against.
Here are a few of the many topics that an employer isn’t legally allowed to ask an applicant during an interview:

1. Race, color, or ethnicity
2. Political affiliation
3. Disabilities that don’t pertain to the job
4. Pregnancy status
5. Religious Affiliation

If any of these topics are discussed during an interview, you may be unlawfully discriminated against.

Here are a few things that an employer is legally able to ask an applicant during an interview:

1. Are you a member of any professional organization?
2. Can we have a report of your past credit performance? The firm can as well perform a credit check on the employee from the relevant authorities.
3. Can you perform most of the essential functions and duties for this position applied for without any help?
4. Can you disclose to us your full names or any other name you have worked under in the past? This question is important for the employer to undertake the employment history.
5. Are you eligible to work in the country where we have our locations?

As an employee, it’s important to know your rights and know that unlawful questions should not get asked in an interview. However, in case the employer asks those questions, you should look for a way to give an appropriate answer that won’t disclose your personal information.
